Umbria, in the heart of the Italian peninsula, represents a transition between the Mediterranean and Continental Biogeographical Regions, forming a hotspot of biodiversity with numerous endemism. This variability is represented in the 102 sites (95 SICs, 5 SPAs and 2 C-type sites) that make up the Natura 2000 Network, covering about 16% of the regional territory. The SUN LIFE project will produce a strategic plan for the management of the entire Natura 2000 network of the Umbria Region to be implemented after the end of the project.
