SETIN is continuing its work in support of the development of Papua New Guinea’s National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan, the NBSAP 2025 to 2030, through a second field mission scheduled from 6 to 29 June 2026.
This mission follows the first field mission carried out in Port Moresby between November and December 2025, which aimed to discuss the revised NBSAP targets with provincial representatives and identify Papua New Guinea’s key biodiversity values. The Inception Workshop, held in Port Moresby from 26 November to 1 December 2025, provided an important basis for the next stages of the assignment, particularly through the discussion of NBSAP actions with representatives from the Provinces.
The second field mission will include four regional workshops in Mt Hagen, Lae, Kokopo and Port Moresby, as well as the validation workshop of Papua New Guinea’s 7th National Report to the Convention on Biological Diversity.
The regional workshops aim to involve local stakeholders in the development of the NBSAP 2025 to 2030 and to complete the collective review of the draft targets developed in 2024, with a particular focus on actions that are relevant at the local level.
As part of the mission, the team will travel from Port Moresby to Mt Hagen, Lae and Kokopo, before returning to Port Moresby for the final regional workshop. Each workshop will take place over two days and is expected to bring together around 30 to 50 participants, including representatives from Provinces and Districts, local NGOs, local communities, associations and community based organisations.
The main objective is to collect and integrate contributions from local stakeholders into the NBSAP 2025 to 2030 currently under development. This process will help ensure that the final biodiversity action plan is aligned with local needs and priorities, while strengthening its capacity to respond to the main threats affecting Papua New Guinea’s biodiversity values.
For the regional workshops, SETIN selected a subset of 113 revised NBSAP actions considered particularly relevant to the local level. These actions will be discussed in smaller working groups, allowing participants to review the proposed measures, share local perspectives and provide concrete inputs for the finalisation of the NBSAP 2025 to 2030.
Alongside the review of NBSAP actions, the workshops will also support the collective identification of key threats to Papua New Guinea’s biodiversity heritage and values. This exercise will build on the list of biodiversity values identified during the first mission in Port Moresby and will contribute to the development of a Theory of Change adapted to the NBSAP.
The workshops will also include the collection of information for the institutional and capacity gap assessment, supporting a more complete understanding of the conditions needed for effective implementation of the strategy.
The expected outputs of the mission include the active participation of local stakeholders in the NBSAP 2025 to 2030 development process, as well as the collection of contributions to better align the strategy with territorial needs, improve the biodiversity action plan and strengthen its response to identified threats.
This work is being developed with the contribution of SETIN team members Catarina Mota, Bulo, Dario Cesarini, Gianluca Serra and Matteo Serlupi Crescenzi, supporting a participatory and locally grounded approach to biodiversity planning in Papua New Guinea.
