The project is part of the Global Platform for Sustainable Cities, a joint initiative of the World Bank and the Global Environment Facility (GEF). This program brings together 20 beneficiary countries around the world, including 46 cities, among which Bamako in Mali. It is based on a global platform designed to connect participating cities, facilitate knowledge exchange, and provide a collaborative space for sustainable urban planning. This programmatic approach aims to foster large-scale integrated urban transformation by promoting a strengthened sustainable development dynamic. By enabling the exchange of experiences on private investment and the sharing of knowledge and best practices from diverse urban contexts, the program contributes to the creation of a knowledge and innovation ecosystem for sustainable cities, particularly in terms of investment, including private capital.
The project aims to address the challenges of rapid and unplanned urbanization by promoting a resilient, inclusive, and sustainable urban model. It focuses on improving urban planning, waste management, sustainable transport, natural resource management and environmental restoration while enhancing climate resilience, citizen participation, and institutional coordination. The project will align with the Global Platform for Sustainable Cities to promote multidirectional knowledge sharing, learning, and synthesis of experiences.
