In April 2025, SETIN prepared the Appropriate Assessment (VINCA) for the conservation and adaptive reuse of the historic Acqua Marcia Reservoir building within Villa Borghese, in the municipality of Rome. The assessment was prepared in accordance with D.P.R. 357/1997, as amended, which implements the EU Habitats Directive in Italy.
The work, carried out entirely by Alessandro Piazzi, assessed the project’s compatibility with the conservation objectives of the Natura 2000 network. It considered the characteristics of the proposed works and the surrounding environmental context, with particular attention to protected habitats, species of Community interest and relevant ecological features. Potential direct, indirect, cumulative and temporary impacts were also assessed.
The work included the collection and analysis of environmental and territorial data, the review of applicable legislation and planning instruments, consultation of ecological and cartographic databases, and preparation of the technical documentation required for the environmental permitting process.
Where appropriate, mitigation measures and good management practices were identified to safeguard the ecological integrity of the Natura 2000 site.
The project involved the conservation and restoration of the historic building, including interventions on the façades, internal surfaces and roofing systems to halt deterioration and preserve its original architectural features. It also included the refurbishment of the mezzanine level to accommodate the new headquarters of the Order of Agronomists and Forestry Doctors, together with accessibility improvements through the removal of architectural barriers.
