SETIN is supporting the development of Papua New Guinea’s NBSAP 2025–2030 and the preparation of the 7th National Report.
A first mission in Port Moresby was carried out between November and December 2025, aimed at discussing the revised NBSAP targets with provincial representatives and identifying Papua New Guinea’s biodiversity values.
A second field mission was scheduled for 6–29 June, during which four regional workshops were planned in Mt Hagen, Lae, Kokopo and Port Moresby, together with the validation workshop of the 7th National Report to CBD.
The scope of the regional workshops is to engage local stakeholders in contributing to the NBSAP 2025–2030 under development and to complete the collective review of the NBSAP draft targets developed in 2024, with a particular focus on actions that are relevant at the local level.
The mission involves travelling from Port Moresby to Mt Hagen, Lae and Kokopo, with a two-day regional workshop organised at each location, including Port Moresby at the end of the mission. Each workshop is expected to involve approximately 30–50 participants, mainly staff from Provinces and Districts, local NGOs, and representatives of local communities and associations.
The main objective is to gather and integrate feedback from local stakeholders on the NBSAP 2025–2030 under development. The process aims to engage local stakeholders in the development of the NBSAP and collect their contributions to better align the NBSAP 2025–2030 with local needs and improve the biodiversity action plan in addressing identified threats to biodiversity values.
NBSAP actions were already a focus of discussion during the Inception Workshop held in Port Moresby between 26 November and 1 December 2025, attended primarily by representatives from the Provinces. From these discussions, SETIN selected a subset of actions relevant to the local level to be further discussed during the regional workshops, for a total of 113 actions.
During each workshop, participants are divided into three to four working groups to discuss these actions. Each group records the discussions and key points, and the results are used directly to support the finalisation of the NBSAP 2025–2030.
Alongside this main objective, the workshops also include the collective identification of key threats to Papua New Guinea’s biodiversity heritage and values. Building on the list of values identified during the Inception Workshop, stakeholders discuss the threats affecting these values. The outcomes of this exercise will be used by the consultants to develop a Theory of Change suitable for the NBSAP.
The workshops also include the collection of information for the institutional and capacity gap assessment, using specifically designed forms. The same methodology is applied across all four regional workshop locations.
SETIN’s team is composed of Jordan Emmanuel Bulo, Dario Cesarini, Gianluca Serra, Alessandro Piazzi, Daniel Bazzucchi, Ana Catarina Mota and Matteo Serlupi Crescenzi, supporting UNDP Papua New Guinea in the delivery of the NBSAP 2025–2030 and 7th National Report activities.
