Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park Management Plan: A Strategic Tool for Protected Area Management

#Project #Services

A Park Plan is a strategic planning instrument that defines the criteria and guidelines through which a protected area manages its natural resources over time. It provides the framework for the conservation of forests, pastures, water resources, wildlife and biodiversity, while supporting a coherent approach to territorial management, environmental protection and future interventions within the Park.

The team composed by Alessandro Piazzi, Daniel Bazzucchi, Giacomo Cozzolino and Riccardo Leone, led the preparation of the Management Plan of the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park (PNALM) supervising both the drafting of the documentation and the development of the cartographic materials supporting the Plan.

At the core of the Plan is the Explanatory Report, which defines management approaches and guidelines for forests, grazing systems and fauna conservation. However, before introducing operational rules and prescriptions, the planning process was supported by a broad phase of data collection, environmental analysis and territorial assessment.

This analytical work is reflected in a detailed set of maps that forms the cartographic framework of the Plan. Together, these maps provide a comprehensive knowledge base for the management of the protected area, while also supporting the work of technicians, public authorities and professionals involved in projects, interventions or environmental assessments within the Park, including VINCA procedures.

From an operational perspective, one of the most relevant outputs is Table 22 – Flora and Fauna Interventions. Unlike the analytical sections of the Plan, this table has a more directly applicative and planning-oriented function. It identifies environmentally sensitive areas, including zones characterized by particularly high ecological and naturalistic value, which may require dedicated protection measures and specific regulations.

The table also outlines a set of concrete actions and intervention measures foreseen within the Park territory. These include initiatives to support biodiversity conservation, measures for the restoration and maintenance of forest ecosystems, and interventions aimed at the protection and management of herbaceous habitats.

By combining strategic planning, environmental analysis and operational guidance, the PNALM Management Plan will provide an important tool to support the protection of natural resources and the sustainable management of the Park in the years ahead.
