Reopening of the Mausoleum of Lucius Munatius Plancus in Gaeta

# News

On 13 March, one of Gaeta’s most emblematic historical landmarks officially reopened to the public: the Mausoleum of Lucius Munatius Plancus.

After a long period of closure that began during the Covid pandemic, the reopening marked an important moment for the city, restoring public access to a site of exceptional historical and cultural value. With more than 2,000 years of history, the mausoleum remains one of the most significant testimonies to Gaeta’s Roman heritage and an enduring symbol of Gaeta’s identity.

The reopening also represented an important step in making the site more accessible to a wider audience. The monument reopened with improved accessibility conditions, including measures designed to facilitate access for people with disabilities. In this sense, the intervention contributed not only to the enhancement of cultural heritage, but also to a more inclusive visitor experience.

SETIN contributed to this process through the development of the Appropriate Assessment and the application of the Minimum Environmental Criteria, with the involvement of Alessandro Piazzi and Riccardo Leone. Their work supported an approach that combined environmental protection, sustainability principles and the conservation of cultural heritage.

This reopening reflects the value of integrated and responsible planning in interventions involving sites of both historical and environmental significance. More than restoring access to an important monument, it also represents a commitment to the sustainable enhancement of cultural heritage, the responsible management of historically significant places, and the promotion of interventions that respect both the identity of the site and its surrounding environmental context.
