#Project Final Submission
SETIN has completed the final submission of the assignment for the preparation of the project Integrated Urban Development in the District of Bamako, developed in support of a more resilient and sustainable urban development model for Mali’s capital.
The assignment, carried out for UNDP, focused on the preparation of a project designed to respond to the growing pressures faced by Bamako as a result of rapid urbanisation. These pressures include environmental degradation, inefficient solid waste management systems, inadequate urban transport, increasing pressure on natural areas, and limited citizen participation in urban transformation processes.
Recognising that these challenges are deeply interconnected, the Integrated Urban Development Project in Bamako adopts a systemic approach, bringing together urban planning, climate resilience, waste management, sustainable mobility, environmental restoration, governance, and citizen participation.
A central element of the project is the establishment of a sustainable green belt, aimed at helping to contain urban sprawl, restore degraded ecosystems, and strengthen the city’s resilience to climate-related risks. This environmental intervention is closely linked to improved solid waste management, contributing to better urban sanitation, reduced pollution, and the development of circular economy practices.
At the same time, the project promotes sustainable urban mobility as a pathway to reduce emissions, improve access to services, and support a more efficient and inclusive urban system. By linking transport, land-use planning and environmental objectives, the project contributes to a more coherent vision for Bamako’s future development.
The proposed interventions are also supported by awareness-raising and citizen participation processes, recognising that long-term urban transformation depends not only on infrastructure and planning, but also on behavioural change, local ownership, and the active involvement of communities.
Strengthened urban governance is another key pillar of the project. Effective implementation will require improved coordination between public institutions, private actors and civil society, as well as the mobilisation of adequate financing, including through innovative financial instruments capable of supporting long-term urban resilience.
Through this assignment, and with the technical expertise of Daniel Bazzucchi, SETIN contributed to the preparation of a project that lays the foundation for a more integrated urban development model in Bamako, combining climate action, environmental protection, improved services, citizen participation and sustainable planning.
